Rally to honor Kalief Browder and end solitary confinement
“Please RSVP here to join us on June 6 at 9 am outside the 60 Centre St. courthouse to honor Kalief Browder and demand NYC implement Local Law 42 to finally end solitary confinement. Then, please come into the courthouse to observe oral arguments at 10:30 am in the City Council’s and Public Advocate’s lawsuit challenging the Mayor’s illegal orders and demanding NYC jails implement Local Law 42.
June 6 marks 10 years since the unspeakable loss of Kalief Browder. June 7 marks 6 years since the unspeakable loss of Layleen Polanco.
The NYC Council passed Local Law 42 to ban solitary confinement in large part because solitary stole the lives of Kalief and Layleen, along with so many other people, and in large part because of the immense advocacy efforts of Akeem Browder and Melania Brown, and so many other family members. The city jails continue to flout the law because of the Mayor’s illegal “emergency” orders purporting to suspend parts of the law. The City Council and the Public Advocate filed a lawsuit in December, with amicus support from JAC and HALT, defenders, and the NYCLU, to challenge these illegal orders and demand implementation of Local Law 42. On June 6 — 10 years to the day that we lost Kalief Browder — the judge will hear oral arguments in the case.
NYC must follow Local Law 42 to end solitary confinement now, and must release people and stop sending people to these deadly jails. RSVP here to join us on June 6.”
